An Update on my Life

Hi everyone πŸ‘‹ I’m back from a short break. I’ve been sick from the flu and I’m actually still recovering from the flu. I haven’t been doing much of anything besides watching movies and resting. I’m trying to get back on the working train and start working again, but I’ve been afraid. I’m afraid to overextend myself and to work too hard when I know my body needs to heal; that is mainly why I’ve been cooped up in my house for a couple of days. I also know how my body reacts to stress and being overworked. I’m not the type of person that can work when I’m sick.

I have been working on my blog though. It’s easier to do because it’s on my phone and it’s one of the only work related things I’ve done in the past couple of days besides going to teach one lesson. It’s been nice to work on my blog and give it the attention it needs. I’ve been obsessed with mommy blogs because I want to be a mommy blogger in the future. Motivational blogs are also my favorite.

I’m probably not going to write too much. I’m going to return back to my resting after writing this. I’ve been watching movies on Netflix. Olympus has fallen has been my absolute favorite movie so far. I also watched the other two movies In the series. I even watched Anger Management with Adam Sandler. I really hope I feel better tomorrow because I have my lsat class tomorrow. And I have a couple of lessons to go to. I’m also meeting my friend to hang out tomorrow. I’ll talk to you guys later!

How much time should you take to work on your blog?

The answer is up to you. You have to know how much time you can invest. Not many people have time to blog. And that’s okay. I know that I don’t always spend a lot of time on my blog. Instead of working on my blog for a couple hours per day, I’ll work on it every day for a couple minutes at a time. I’m not perfect. You don’t have to be. You will not always be able to work on your blogs for hours and hours at a time.

I will say that blogging is a total investment rather than a daily investment. You can write a blog post today and post it on the same day; that blog post will stay there forever. And you can reap the rewards from it long after you post it. When you reach about 200 blog posts, your blog should have enough content to entertain your audience for a long time. Also when you update your content and add more blog posts, you’ll have more posts that can attract views. I think that this is the smartest use of time. I know many YouTubers that utilize this same strategy.

The main takeaway is to continue working on your blog when you can. When you reach 200 blog posts, your blog will be in a good place to continue gaining views. Good luck on your blogging journey and keep blogging πŸ‘

Just woke up

I’m going back to sleep again after I write this post, but you guys are the best. Thank you for showing so much support for my blogs. I’m so thankful to have my blogs and the WordPress community! πŸ‘

A Large In-Depth Guide on How to Start a Business

Screen Shot 2018-03-19 at 12.41.38 PM

I’m a huge believer in investing in yourself. For example, many people go to college and they invest in their education. When they graduate, I know people become envious of them. More often than not, women will invest in their clothes, makeup, and hair. And that is great because it builds you up. When you start to become valuable, people are going to turn their heads around to look. Starting a business is just like that… once you start it, people are not going to look at you. They automatically have this assumption in their heads that you are not successful yet. And if they hear that you’re investing tons of money into starting your business, they’re probably going to look down at you even more! My advice: who cares? They have no idea how to do it, but you know.

1. The first thing that you should do is create a business idea

When you’re thinking about what you want to do, choose something that inspires you and makes you happy. You’re going to be spendingΒ a lot of time with this, so why waste your time on something that you are not COMPLETELY passionate about? Original ideas are always better than the same ideas that people have come up with before. If I went to a store looking for shoes, there are hundreds of shoe stores that are ready to offer the same thing. If I am looking for content from Joey Graceffa, for example, there’s only one place where I can find it. If he designs his own t-shirts, mugs, or stationary, people are going to buy it. He built himself up with his own unique personality and videos. Be original. Think of an idea that only you can achieve.

2. Don’t invest any money yet

You don’t want to spend all of your money in one place. Of course, it’s cool to have all the business cards, flyers, and office space, but do you really need it? I’m not saying that those things are not important, but you have to look at the fact that you haven’t even made any money yet. There are tons of ways to advertise, design, and sell online/in-person. In my personal opinion, I think that spending tons of money on these things is not worth it. I know that there’s a debate on this, but that’s just what I believe.

Here are some great tools that you can use for free when you first start out:

3. Using the tools that you have

I’ll talk about wordpress first. It’s my absolute favorite website creator that I’ve used so far. I’ve found that Wix is way too difficult to use and there’s not enough tools to create a blog on there. You don’t have to purchase any of the premium plans right away. I haven’t. And I’m completely satisfied with that. I’m able to publish and organize my website pretty well. That’s all I can really ask for. It’s also user-friendly to use, so it doesn’t take much to get started.

I haven’t tried this editing program out yet, but I’ve heard it’s amazing. It allows you to create icons that you can link to different accounts. I’m not into computer design/graphics, but the amount of customization tools that they offer is worth it. AND it’s free πŸ™‚

This is my absolute favorite social media platform right now. It’s where I get 90% of my viewership. I can’t think of a better platform to expand your business than facebook. I don’t only use it for my websites, but I also use it for my piano studio business. For some reason, it does really well on facebook. I’m able to advertise everywhere and facebook marketplace is a fantastic tool for you if you are looking to sell/advertise.

I’m also a huge fan of making pages on facebook.Β Here is the link to my facebook page, if you needed an example.Β If you’re not using facebook, then I feel like you’re really missing out.

I feel like all i’m recommending are things that I absolutely love! And yeah, that’s pretty much true. This editing software is also completely free. It helps you make your designs so pretty and professional.

Here’s a preview on the options that they give:

Yeah, it’s amazing. I highly recommend getting very comfortable using these because it can save you tons of money in the long run.

3. The next step is to just jump into it

If you’re looking for advice on business stuff, you’re in the right place. I developed Pocketfuloflearning as a way to help other people manage their business. Even if you’re thriving right now, it doesn’t hurt to get more advice and to learn.

I would focus on advertising first. You’re not going to get much traffic without effective advertising. The best way to advertise is to create a good flyer and send it out everywhere. You want many people to find it, and they’re not going to if it’s only on one place. Choose one social media platform and stick with it. It’s not worth it to spend all your time developing on all the platforms. As always, I recommend using facebook.

4. Advertising

So, you’re pretty much on your way. It looks like you’re beginning to get the hang of it, but wait! Do you have customers/viewers yet? If you don’t, you need to think about advertising. I learned most of my information fromΒ Suzi. She explains things so well, I feel like I have gained so much knowledge from her. Youtube, in general, is an excellent way to learn about starting a business.

I use all of my advertising on facebook and instagram. I don’t have quite a large following on instagram because I rarely post anything. If I did, I feel like I would be pretty successful on there.

5. Spending valuable time resting v. working

You have to know when to take a break. I know when I started, I could barely sleep because I was so excited. And then I realized that nothing happens over night. Even with advertising, I was expecting a phone call right after I posted the ad. It doesn’t work like that. After I post a blog post, I’m always expecting a heap of people to start reading it. It never happens like that. The process is actually extremely slow. It takes time and probably even years to get to a point where you’re making a substantial amount. Therefore, why work on it 24/7? Of course you should be putting work into it, but you have to take care of yourself too. If you feel stressed, the kind of work that you give will translate into just that. If you are well-rested and happy, the kind of work that you put out will be better. Take your time. Relax, and breathe.

6. Consistently give and set a schedule

If you have time, don’t hesitate to work on some things for your business. Give what you can and be incredibly patient. If you have trouble being productive, set up a schedule and work at it. I recommend using Google calendar because you can also open it on your phone as an application. Know when your meetings are and take the time to schedule them in. Not everything is perfect. I really don’t expect them to be, but your business is going to miss you if you don’t consistently put the effort in.

7. And that’s it!

There’s a ton of more stuff that I want to talk about, but you can look at my other blogs if you need more information on that. I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about it before somewhere. If you have any questions, please let me know. There are tons of resources out there!

Let’s start learning!

How to Use Social Media for Your Website

Social media is a great platform for advertising and what I like most is that it’s free. There are also many platforms: Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram. If you are active on all of these platforms, you are able to reach hundreds of people each day.

The first step is to sign up for all of these platforms. Make an account and use similar usernames for each. I’ve found that this is the longest part, but once you do it, it’s already done! And it’s really exciting. You are beginning the journey to being a successful website owner. I look back at the very beginning of my journey and I miss it. I was still discovering everything and it was so new to me.

The second thing that you should do is link all of your social media together. The most important thing is to link them to your website. Constantly link all of them together. You want people to know that you have social media and they can continue to follow you on these platforms. If you never tell anyone, no one is going to know.

Thirdly, you should post multiple times a day on each of these platforms. People want to look at content and additional content. Post advertisements for your website and talk about what you’re doing for the day. Remember that you are creating a brand and that you have to post content that people will like.

The last thing I would do is use these platforms to send out your blogs. You want to have these platforms as a way to send out your content and get people to visit your website. If you do all of these effectively, I have no doubt that you will be successful with social media!

Creating your advertisements

When you are at the very beginning of your piano teacher journey, youΒ have to understand how to sell yourself. I see hundreds of piano teacher advertisements online and I see hundreds of them that are not very effective. It’s more about knowing what people are looking for and how you want to present yourself. You can sell yourself as the professional/expert… then you would attract parents/students that are looking for high quality learning. You can sell yourself as a nice person and people will still come over because they feel like they can trust you. It all depends on how you create your advertisement.

When I started, I created an ad that was a flyer. It looked kinda like this:

I’m not saying thatΒ this is bad, but it’s not great. This is a standard poster. It attracts people, but it doesn’t offer much information. People want to hear a voice. They want to know that you are an actual person and not a scammer. There are millions of scammers on the internet, how do they know that you are not one of them?

I would sell myself as someone that is genuine. I show that I am an actual person that has a good reputation. It’s hard to do this, but I’ll give you an example:

Hi guys! My name is Lia and I’m looking for more students to add to my studio. I currently am reaching capacity, but I am really excited to teach! I’m more focused on teaching students long term, therefore my prices are very affordable. I cannot imagine charging more for lessons when I know that the students would only be learning for a short time; that is not part of my philosophy. I want to be able to help students learn music and become excellent musicians. If you have any questions, please message me! Best regards, Lia.

Believe it or not, that is one of the simplest and most effective ads that I have made. It got me up to 50 interviews and messages. It’s not about selling a product, it’s more about letting them know that there is an actual person that has a LEGITIMATE piano studio. And they are good at teaching the piano. If you cannot convince them of that, they will most likely scan over your ad and run the other direction.

Now that you have made your ad, where are you going to place it?

I wouldn’t recommend craigslist because of its ability to attract semi-shady people. I’m not saying that it’s shady, but it definitelyΒ canΒ be. I highly recommend posting it on Facebook. I also have a Facebook page that is connected to my Facebook account. When you have a good page on fb, people are going to see that you are substantial. The interest of joining your studio and contacting you becomes stronger. If people are not able to be convinced that you are trustworthy, it will be difficult to get them to come back.

Lastly, I recommend that you create a professional page either through a website domain or through Facebook. Include pictures and copies of events that you have hosted. It’s important to give substance to your name. You are not a scammer, and you are valuable. The internet can be one of the best places to advertise, but it can definitely be the worst. At its best, it is highly lucrative. Good luck!

Ten Tips to Keeping Your Business Afloat

If I had to give ten tips to new business owners, I would definitely recommend these. These tips can apply to piano teachers or website creators πŸ™‚

1. Always keep upgrading

If you use the same system for years, it’s time to make a change. I know not everyone likes a change and it may feel incredibly overwhelming. Don’t think of it as a change, but think of it as an advancement. I’ve been slowly changing my teaching methods and I’m trying out a bunch of new methods. Change can be good and it’s nice to see new things!

2. Double book everything

I’ve posted about this before in my previous post about ghosting (piano teachers edition). And this is very important. I didn’t know everyone was doing this, but double booking your clients ensures that you willΒ always have business. Make sure that you are always advertising, so the influx of clients never stops.

3. Hire an assistant

This may seem like a luxury, but hear me out. An assistant is another helping hand. They can manage your social media for you or they can complete other tasks. Let yourself relax. On your days off, have your assistant work. Tasks are still being completed, but you can say that you’re working seven days a week!

4. Keep a planner

If you haven’t checked out my planner blog, you can read itΒ here. I always keep a planner and it’s incredibly satisfying knowing that everything is organized. I know exactly what to expect out of my day. I can also schedule in any additional activities if I need to. A planner is aΒ must for any business owner.

5. Take two days off

I know that most of us want to keep working and our minds are constantly racing to produce more content. However, a break is absolutely necessary for any hardworking business owner. We need to clear our minds. I’ve realized that owning a business comes with a never-ending list of tasks to complete. Therefore, our jobs are never done. We need the time to cool off and come back with a clear mind. Trust me.

6. Don’t overload on the spending

Think about it. We are trying to make money, so why spend more than we make? It’s tempting to purchase all of the shiny upgrades you see, but it’s better to save. There are hundreds of ways to advertise for free. And social media is a free platform to advertise also. Utilize what you have before you start spending money on something that you might not even need.

7. Keep advertising and promoting

People are constantly checking social media. When you post something, the post may be bumped down right away. Therefore, you have toΒ keep posting. If people cannot tell that you are alive on social media, the amount of traffic that you get will slowly start to disappear.

8. Keep the fire going

When you start the fire, don’t let it die out. Keep adding sticks and wood to let the fire keep burning. If you stop for a month, don’t be surprised when you lose a large chunk of your income. I’m not saying that you have to constantly add to the fire, but adding a piece of firewood every other day will allow you to see consistent results.

9. Make sure that you have goals

I know that we are told not to make huge goals that we can’t accomplish, but I’ve been told to make some goals. You should always be reaching for more. If you aren’t striving for progress, it can be easy to give up.

10. Think long-term

When you are setting your prices, think about what you are expecting long-term. Are students really going to be happy paying expensive prices for a couple of years? Are you really going to sustain yourself by ONLY blogging? If you are moving out, think about how much income you are going to have to make. Plan ahead and think about what’s going to happen in the future. How are you going to sustain yourself with your business? If you want to start a blog, you have to do it now. Viewers don’t just appear overnight. It takes months to start a blog and to build traffic. Before you quit your day job, consider these factors carefully.
